Cruise And Stay Holidays

There are plenty of fun activities to keep you entertained while touring the seas on a cruise ship. The bigger cruise ships can have plenty of things to offer depending on the size of the ship. One of the most popular things that people tend to indulge in is sun bathing. There is nothing better then catching some rays whilst touring the seas of the world topping up your tan. If sunbathing isn’t your thing don’t worry, practically every cruise ship will have on board entertainment such as movies, performances and some even have live magicians which will certainly pass some time on during the later hours of the night.

If curiosity got the better of you why not explore the ship as some of them nowadays are ridiculously large and just waiting to be explored. Take a trip around the ship at the beginning of the cruise to find out what it has to offer and you know where to find what you’re looking for to make the most out of the cruise of a lifetime.

During the sunny hours of the day you can indulge in a day in or by the pool. Every cruise ship has an onboard swimming pool to keep you cool and also get some great exercise as swimming can work pretty much every muscle in the body and is a great way to get in shape so you can get that body you’ve always wanted to match that tan.

If you have kids that are getting restless check to see if the cruiser has an arcade as many do. Provide them with some money and they will be happy staying in there all day long – well until the money runs out but I’m sure it will most definitely pass more then a few hours so you can get that peace and quiet you need.

One of the best activities you can take up which everyone likes (especially the women) is shopping. Many cruisers have large shopping malls so you can get all the duty free you require but be sure to check your countries regulations on bringing the items back as you’re only allowed so much and it would be a waste if you went overboard. There’s nothing better then enjoying a nice meal with your family in some of the best cuisines the seas have to offer so be sure to check them out whilst your on board the cruise.

Why cruise and stay

You get the best of both worlds - a chance to visit many places from the comfort of a ‘floating hotel' one week, and to explore one destination in depth the other.

It makes the most of your holiday. Cruise-and-Stay is a particularly smart option if you're planning to cruise in a faraway region. Why go all that way without seeing and doing as much as you can?

It gives you the chance to combine lots of activity with plenty of time to relax - get busy sightseeing on your cruise, or whiz about on your land stay and crash out once you board the ship, it's your call.

A Cruise-and-Stay holiday, or pre/post tours, can all be booked through your chosen cruise line or tour operator, meaning there is no need to make independent arrangements.

Cruise And Stay

Cruise and Stay holidays are the perfect way to relax. You can sunbathe on a deck on a luxury liner or stay in a quality hotel. With a cruise and stay holiday you can combine the best of both worlds to make the most of your holiday.

Cruise and stay holidays are perfect for people who don't haven't been on a cruise before and are worries they may not like it. Cruise and stay holidays allow you to combine a cruise with a more traditional holiday.

Another great thing about a cruise and stay holiday is that you can create your own flexible holiday. Cruises generally visit more than one resort therefore you will get the opportunity to visit more places than you would have if you had stayed in a hotel.

Cruise and Stay: Best of Both Worlds

You can relax on board a luxury liner before you go exploring the world. Cruise and stay holidays allow you to sail the seven seas and explore far flung continents.

While meals are included with your cruise, you'll need to bring extra money so you can dine ashore.

Planning a holiday

Many people take their main holiday in summer, and although some people choose a last-minute break, others plan their holiday months in advance.

The beginning of the year is a good time for people to start looking at holiday brochures. Tour operators (companies that organise holidays) as well as travel agents (the people that sell holidays) give lots of information about holiday destinations and types of holiday. Apart from the traditional two-week beach holiday, you can choose from a range of holidays: a cruise (holiday on a ship), an activity holiday (a holiday that involves walking, cycling, climbing or other sports), a city break (a weekend or a few days in a different city) and so on. A lot of people choose a package holiday, where flights and accommodation are included in the price. But many people prefer an independent holiday, where they make their own travel arrangements.

If you travel independently, you will need to book your flights or train tickets. Unless you have an onward destination, you will probably book a return journey. Then you will need to make a reservation at a hotel, or another place to stay, such as a campsite (if you are camping in a tent), or a caravan site (if you are staying in a caravan), or a B&B (a bed and breakfast).

For all types of foreign holidays, it is essential that you check you have all your travel documents. Make sure your passport hasn’t expired, and that you have a visa if necessary. If you are travelling to some countries, you also need to make sure that all your vaccinations (protection against illness) are up to date. For some countries you might need a vaccination against hepatitis, or yellow fever, for example.

As your departure date gets nearer, you can start to plan the details of your journey. Perhaps it will be a good idea to buy a guide book, or a phrase book, if you don’t speak much of the local language. Some people like to read up on (= get lots of background information) on where they are going, and find out about the places of interest and “must-see” sights. It’s also fun to make a packing list, so you don’t forget any vital clothes or toiletries.

It’s also a good idea to buy local currency in advance, if your flight gets in (= arrives) in the middle of the night, when no banks are open. Most airlines also advise you to take out (=get) travel insurance – just in case your flight is delayed or cancelled, or if you get ill and need to be repatriated (sent back to your country).

Don’t forget to make arrangements for your pets and your house while you’re away. Put your dog into kennels (a dog hotel), and leave a key with your neighbour – just in case! Hopefully your neighbour will keep an eye on your house while you’re on holiday! Finally, get to the airport with plenty of time to spare. Nowadays it can take much longer to get through security and onto the plane. Have a nice trip and send your neighbour a postcard!

Insider Cruising Tips

First time passengers have difficulty envisioning what their cruise holiday will be like. Here are a few insider cruise tips that will help make your cruise holiday experience more enjoyable.

  • On the Costa Web site you can reserve land excursions by the date issued by the system during the reservation process (Must be done at least 7 days before the departure date of the primary port of cruise, which may differ from the passenger's boarding port). Since most shore excursions fill up fast, registering online using the data (first and last name, date of birth) that were given at the time when you purchased your cruise, can help guarantee you can participate in the excursions you want.
  • Costa offers a good selection of Buon Viaggio Gifts which may be purchased up to one week in advance of sailing on Costa’s website for delivery in your cabin. Gifts include fresh flower bouquets, wine and champagne and onboard credits.
  • A lot of luggage looks the same. Attach a colored ribbon to each of your bags to make them easier to find.
  • When packing clothing attire, keep in mind that most of the time you’ll feel comfortable in casual resort wear including light cotton clothing or swimwear and a beach robe for covering up indoors. Tennis or low-heeled walking shoes are recommended for exploring ports of call. For Northern Europe sailings, sweaters, lightweight jackets and raincoats are appropriate. On formal nights, ladies may wear evening gowns or cocktail-length dresses; gentlemen may choose dark suits or tuxedos. On other evenings, gentlemen generally wear sport coats and slacks, while ladies wear resort attire. There are laundry and valet services available onboard for a nominal fee, so don’t bring more than you need.
  • When you arrive at the cruise terminal, keep your cruise documents handy in your carry-on bag. When checking in, you will need to present your cruise documents, along with your proof of citizenship and completed Passenger Declaration Form to the Costa reception desk.
  • Soon after you have boarded the ship is a good time to book your favourite spa treatment as the most popular ones fill up fast.
  • If you plan to arrive a few hours before the ship’s departure, you will find a delicious Welcome Aboard Buffet waiting for you.
  • During your cruise, the ship will offer seminars highlighting the attractions and shopping at each port. Typically these seminars are offered the day before arriving at each destination. Plan to attend these meetings to educate yourself on the destination and its sightseeing opportunities.
  • When in port, remember that other countries may be more conservative than your own. When leaving the ship, dressing with casual elegance will show respect for other cultures.

Nile Cruises - An alternative way to see Egypt

Relaxing on a cruise ship sounds like a great way to see different Countries, but if the thought of sailing stareing at the sea is not your idea of fun, what about a Nile Cruise - taking a cruise on the river Nile, witnessing the magnificent scenery, and great way to see cities like Luxor and Aswan.

Nile Cruises - An alternative way to see Egypt

The Nile is accepted by most authorities as being the longest river on Earth, about 4,184 miles long - Nile cruises are popular because nearly all the cultural and historical sites of Ancient Egypt are found along the banks of the river.

It is important to book your cruise with a UK-based Nile Cruises specialist since a lot of the bad press about cruises in Egypt comes from poorly run local run cruise ships.

One UK-based company that I have come across is Cruise Holiday Nile, a specialist in putting together “custom-made” cruises that combine excellent Nile Cruise vessels with flights to suit your pocket and choice of departure airport.

I’m not the type of person to sit on the beach or fight over sun loungers next to the swimming pool, and whilst I want to relax, nothing excites me more than visiting the local attractions and sights. I’d love to visit the magical temples of Luxor and the Valley of The Kings, the burial place of The pharaohs, and I get the best of both worlds on a Nile cruise.

Nile Cruises - An alternative way to see Egypt

The company are part of the Coop Travel Trading Group, which means you are ABTA and ATOL protected – this is important for travellers in case you come into any problems whilst you are on your Nile Cruise.

Brazil Travel - Cruise down the Amazon

Cruise Holiday Travel in the Amazon, the world’s most famous river, is a typical dream. But the Amazon world may be rather different to that which you expect. You may end up disappointed. You should plan your Amazon trip correctly, and shape it to your style and to the time you have to enjoy the Amazon.

There are different ways of visiting the Amazon rainforest. If you are pressed for time, or if you think you would not like to live for four, five, six or more days in a beautiful and calm, but repetitive world of water and trees, then avoid a long river trip.

In that case, a quick flight to Manaus (a city in the very heart of the Amazon, 1,000 miles upstream from the river mouth) is preferable. Once there, you can model the tour to your tastes. You can enjoy several short local cruises, you can explore some rainforest treks, you can swim and fish, you can visit local people living in the forest (the caboclos), you can get a good grasp of what the rainforest and the river area and you can even play golf.

This option demands a stay of, say, 3 or 4 days minimum. It all depends on what you want. Another alternative when visiting the Amazon involves a longer tour on the river - typically a trip from Belem (at the mouth of the Amazon) to Manaus, or the inverse. This cruise can be made on a transatlantic cruiser, and includes a great range of cities and ports outside the Amazon. Tours of two weeks are very common. You just need to cost it, and to book the cruise early enough (there isn’t a regular transatlantic cruiser route to the Amazon, and so you should plan the cruise well in advance).

More adventurous travellers may prefer other kind of boats and travel for a long river cruise. There are, in Belem and Manaus, local tourist riverboats and regular river vessels (for local passengers and goods) making the trip between the two towns. These two kinds of riverboats the tourist and the regular ones - constitute the best way of experiencing the full mood and the immensity of the Amazon (and, in the case of travelling in a regular vessel, the best way to have contact with the real people, and feel their friendly mood, their way of facing the life).

But you should also ponder the possible downsides of these options. One of them is the uncertain duration of the trip: it can be four days, if the weather conditions and the currents and other factors are favourable, but it can also be extended for one, two or more days, which may clash with your travel plans, flights, etc.
